Should I feed my dog wet or dry dog food?
The choice between wet or dry dog food is down to your preference and your dog's. So long as you're picking a good quality complete food that contains everything your pet needs, it's up to you.
Complete dry dog food is the most common option in the UK because it's easy to store and prepare. There are lots of different ways of preparing dry dog kibble and there's a whole range of options available on the market these days.
Wet dog food will contain a lot more water which means the serving quantities need to be a little higher which can push the feeding cost up. As wet dog food is cooked, the process kills all micro-organisms removing the need for any preservatives.
How is dry dog food prepared?
The most common methods to prepare dry dog food is extruding or baking.
Extrusion is the most common way for cooking dry dog food in the UK. All the raw ingredients are ground down to form a dough consistency, they're then passed through a giant steam cooker. Once it's dried off and cooled down, it's coated in fats and oils which add to its flavour.
Baking can be done at lower temperatures than extrusion which means a few more nutrients are left in as the natural ingredients are more intact. When dog food is baked it does need a certain amount of wheat as a gluten to bind the ingredients together.
Cold pressing dog food is fairly new but starting to become more popular as it allows the food to be made without the need for high temperatures or pressures.
Air dried dog food involves gently circulating a current of heated air around the food to slowly evaporate all the moisture. This method means that many of the proteins, vitamins and enzymes aren't as damaged as they can be by other cooking methods but there aren't as many air dried dog foods on the market yet.
