Should I feed my dog wet or dry dog food?
The choice between wet or dry dog food is entirely down your and of course your dog’s preference.
Complete dry dog food is the most popular option in the UK because it’s easy to store and prepare. There are lots of different ways of preparing dry dog kibble and there’s a whole range of options available on the market today.
Wet dog food will contain a lot more water which means the serving quantities need to be a little higher which can push the feeding cost up if used as a main diet.
Whilst you can feed an exclusively wet or dry diet, you could offer your dog a combination of both to provide some variety and enrichment. So long as you’re sticking to an appropriate amount of each and picking good quality complete diets this is an acceptable and beneficial way to feed.
How is dry dog food prepared?
The most common methods to prepare dry dog food is extruding or baking.
Extrusion is the most common way for cooking dry dog food in the UK. All the raw ingredients are ground down to form a dough consistency, they’re then passed through a giant steam cooker. Once it’s dried off and cooled down, it’s sometimes coated in fats and oils which add to its flavour.
Baking can be done at lower temperatures than extrusion which can mean a few more nutrients are left in as the natural ingredients are more intact.
Cold pressing dog food is still a fairly new way of processing but starting to become more popular as it allows the food to be made without the need for high temperatures or pressures. However, there can be some misleading concepts around this kind of diet. We are pleased to stock a truly lower temperature diet which does not use precooked ingredients.
