Pets Corner is 50!

This month is a significant one for us here at Pets Corner as we’re celebrating 50 years of sourcing and supplying the best products for your pets.

As the business continues to go from strength to strength, we’re delighted that our original ethos of being a family-run, ethical retailer still holds true.

From small beginnings…

Founded in the era of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, Pets Corner began life as a small shop in Haywards Heath run by husband and wife team Mark and Sandra Richmond. Their first tentative steps into the industry were driven by a love of animals and a background in farming, which armed them with the knowledge to support and guide local pet owners. From the outset the shop was a family affair, with family members helping out whenever possible.

A second shop in Hove followed five years later, and since then the Pets Corner brand has never looked back. Throughout the decades the ‘family’ has expanded, taking on more staff and more branches.

Masterminded by Mark and Sandra’s son Dean as CEO, we’ve now become the second largest pet retailer in the UK with 145 stores across the UK and Wales, employing over 900 staff. But, no matter how big we get, we never forget how it all started. Our senior management team help to keep our feet on the ground, as all but one of them started as Saturday sales staff or shop floor assistants and have stayed with us for the journey.

Pet retailers with a difference

Our reputation for offering expert advice started back in the early days of trading. We took pride in selling superior quality goods supported by helpful and knowledgeable staff. And so the Pets Corner Difference was founded. 

To this day, it underpins everything we do and everything we sell. We are the only UK pet retailer to classroom train our employees in our own academy, using our own curriculum. So if one of our team offers advice on nutrition, medicines or husbandry you can be sure they know what they’re talking about.

What’s next?

The most significant development in recent years has been our expansion from offering pet products into wider, complimentary services. The Pet Family group now includes our own range of pet food, veterinary practices and online pet food comparison site

Last year, we introduced the UK’s first natural grooming spas for dogs called Dogwood, which operate out of six of our stores. This venture has proved particularly popular with customers and dogs alike! With plans to roll out another 12 spas over the next year, the future looks busy.

On reaching our 50th anniversary, our CEO Dean commented:

“After 50 years of retailing we’ve been lucky enough to build a loyal band of customers who appreciate where we’ve come from and what we believe in.

“No matter how big the business grows, the aim of the company will always remain the same - to provide an outstanding service to loving pet owners. Despite the rise in online shopping our company continues to buck the trend because our customers value the opportunity to come in and ask for advice.”
