What are the best dog chews for my dog?

Is chewing natural for a dog?

Chewing is a natural instinct for dogs; puppies chew when they’re teething, and older dogs like to chew to keep their teeth clean and jaw strong. Chewing releases endorphins (feel good hormones!) in dog’s brains, so chewing is super important to keep dogs feeling happy and enriched. It’s important to ensure your puppy or dog always has access to something that’s safe for them to chew, to allow for this natural and beneficial behaviour. Dog’s shouldn’t be told off if they chew something they are not supposed to, remember they don’t understand they have done wrong. By providing your pooch with suitable chews to attract their chewing attention, you can keep your shoes safe!

If you’re finding their chewing destructive, try to identify why! Remember dogs can get bored and anxious very easily and chewing inappropriate objects can be a symptom of this. Engage your dog’s brain and focus on mentally enriching them, think training, scent trails and games! Are dog chews safe?

It’s extremely important to always keep an eye on your dog when they are chewing. By watching your dog, you can be aware of when is appropriate to take the chew away from them. If your pooch is pulling off large pieces of the chew, that’s the time to remove it from them to avoid them swallowing anything. Remember once a chew has been whittled down, it’s time for a replacement. If your dog has a tendency to bury their chews in the garden for later, it’s probably best if you dig it back up and pop it in the bin (just make sure they’re not looking), garden aged chews won’t do their digestive system any good!
