How do I find the best food for my dog?
Dogs are omnivorous carnivores which means they're ideally suited to a diet of meat and plant sources. Proteins should make up the majority of your dog's diet and this needs to be from a quality source. They also need carbohydrate, fat, fibre and vitamins/minerals. When you're checking their dog food label, the ingredient listed first will be the largest volume.
What should I check for on my dog food label?
When you’re checking your dog’s food label, make sure a protein source is stated first or high up in the listing. Keep an eye out for the healthiest types of meat, so terms such as whole carcass, fresh meat and meat meal/dried meats. Alongside this rice, maize, oats and potatoes are excellent carbohydrate sources to spot in a diet. It’s always best to avoid vague terminologies such as ‘cereals’ as these could contain less digestible grains such as Wheat and Sorghum which could lead to intolerance.
What's the difference between complete and complementary dog food?
Complete dog foods mean they contain everything your dog needs as part of a healthy balanced diet. You don’t need to add anything to these foods, and these can be wet, dry or frozen food.
Complementary foods don’t contain all the nutrients needed by your pet or they’re contained in inappropriate portions. For this reason, complementary dog food should be fed alongside a mixer like a biscuit or complete food. Alternatively, you can use complementary foods simply as treats.
