Why Do Cats Eat Grass?

Published date: 11 March 2024

Cats eating grass often features high on the list of baffling feline behaviours. Owners can be left feeling a bit confused after seeing their furry friend munching on their lawn.

Although this behaviour can seem rather odd, do not worry as grass eating is normal and natural! So, why do they do this?

Grass has Digestive Benefits

Grass is high in plant fibre, which helps to push food through the digestive tract. This is why sometimes your cat will throw up after eating some greenery. This is nothing to be concerned about, although it can be frustrating when they do this on the carpet…

Plant matter also helps with lubricating the digestive tract. This helps to reduce hairballs and stops them from becoming impacted.

Psst: Struggle with a furball-prone feline? The right diet is essential for digestive health and reducing hairball problems. Check out our specialised hairball food.

Packed with Vitamins

Alongside providing an important source of fibre, grass also provides a blend of essential vitamins and minerals. Grass offers wonderful extra nutrition to our feline friends.

Every cat will benefit from having clean fresh grass to munch on. Growing your own cat grass is a great way to encourage your cat’s natural behaviour, improve digestion and provide grass you know is safe.

The King Cat Grass Kit is a handy and cute kit to help you grow grass at home. Don’t worry if you aren’t green-fingered, this grass is incredibly easy to grow.

So, there you go grass eating isn’t such a baffling behaviour after all.
