The 5 Signs Your Cat Loves You

Published date: 07 February 2025

Many people accuse our feline friends of being aloof, independent and lacking in emotion.

This is simply not true; your cat can love just as much as a dog. However, they are going to show their affection in different ways.

So, in honour of Valentine’s Day, here are 5 signs your cat adores you.

1) Blinking or Winking at You

In human terms, blinking would certainly seem like a strange way to show how much you care. However, for our cats, this is the highest compliment.

Breaking eye contact is a big no-no in the feline world. During conflict, cats will often lock eyes and the cat that looks away is the one who loses. So, if your kitty is blinking and winking at you, it indicates they trust you and feel secure around you. How cute! Just remember to slowly blink or wink back…

2) Showing Their Fluffy Belly

The tempting soft and fluffy underside of your cat is a very vulnerable place. So, by rolling over and exposing their delightful belly, your cat is showing you they feel safe and can trust you.

Although a word of warning, rolling over and showing their belly isn’t necessarily a sign they want you to stroke it. Resist the temptation!

3) Kneading Their Paws on You

Is your cat a dedicated and hard-working baker? Kneading their paws on you is a sure sign of love and contentment. This movement mimics the kneading motion kittens make on their mother’s belly for milk.

So, enjoy those little claws digging in and remember it is done with love. Want to learn more about cat behaviour? Read about The Secret Language of Cats.

4) Rubbing Against You

One of the most important means of communication for our feline friends is scent marking.

When our cats navigate the world, they leave behind chemical messages known as pheromones. Think of these as post-it notes that communicate messages to themselves and other cats.

One of the most common scent-marking behaviours is rubbing their cheeks against people and objects. This leaves behind a message of security and reassurance, so it’s certainly a compliment if your kitty is leaving these happy pheromones on you!

Worried your cat is feeling anxious? One way to help support your worried kitty is to use pheromone-based calming products.

5) Spending Time with You

Every cat is different, and some value their personal space more than others. So don’t be disheartened if your cat doesn’t enjoy rubbing against you or being stroked lots.

If your cat often chooses to be in the same room with you, even if they refuse a fuss and turn away, then this is a sure sign of their feelings towards you. They want to be close to their favourite person and feel comfortable in your presence.

Why not say I Love You with a Valentines Edition McAdams Tray? For many cats the way to their heart is truly through their stomach.

I hope you are now safe in the knowledge that your kitty truly does love you. As for respect, that might be something they need to work on…
