How Pets Can Improve Your Mental Health

Mental health issues impact most of us at some point in our lives. From struggling with bereavement to dealing with anxiety, mental health can manifest in so many ways.
Research from Mind found that 1 in 4 adults experience a mental health problem every year. These are incredibly sad statistics, and while we are not experts when it comes to mental health, we are when it comes to our pets.
At Pets Corner, we certainly understand the positive impact that animals can have on us.
This mental health awareness week, we wanted to celebrate what our furry, scaly and feathered friends can do for us. So, here are five ways pets can enrich our lives and support our mental health.
1) Pets Offer Comfort and Companionship
The presence of a much-adored animal can make even the worst days that tiny bit more bearable.
Sometimes, having a companion is enough to help you get through the roughest part of the day. Whether you have a cat that will curl up with you in your bed during bad times or a dog that is always faithfully close by, animals do seem to know.
The gentle rumbling sound of a cat purring or the soft sleep noises of a dog can be soothing, ease some of our anxiety and remind us we aren’t alone.
2) Pets Can Improve Lifestyle
Some days, staying inside and keeping away from everyone is a tempting prospect. Of course, if you are a dog owner this isn’t possible, because in rain or shine your canine companion needs their walkies.
It might not feel like it at the time, however, being forced out of the house and on a (possibly muddy) stroll is beneficial for your physical and mental health. Going for a walk isn’t a solution for everything you might be feeling, but a bit of movement encourages endorphins to hopefully make you feel a tiny bit better.
Plus, of course, every walk is a chance to bond even more with your dog. If you don’t want to get outside for yourself, think of that walk as a chance to make your dog happier and healthier.
3) Pets Bring People Together
Whether it is meeting other dog owners on a walk or sharing naughty cat stories with a fellow feline lover, there is no denying that pets bring us together.
The theme of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week is Community. We might be biased, but the pet owning community is wonderful, accepting and often covered in fur.
Our amazing in-store teams chat to hundreds of pet owners every day and delight in their stories of their beloved furry (and some not-so-furry) friends.
Many of our customers also meet other like-minded owners in our stores, during our Puppy Hours and while shopping for their essentials. The pet owning community is incredible, so we encourage you to pop along to your local Pets Corner for a chat and to show off your pet (or at least share some pictures!).
4) Pets Don’t Judge
It might sometimes feel like your cat is judging your every action, but the truth is, our pets accept us for who we are.
They will listen to you, not criticise or interrupt, and they offer their love without question. Having a companion who always has your back can improve self-confidence and self-worth.
5) Pets Provide Structure
Having a daily routine can help us feel more grounded.
Pets are brilliant for providing structure. The daily tasks of feeding, walking, playing with and caring for another being can offer a great sense of purpose.
And remember, on those days when you struggle to do as much, your cat won’t settle for being fed later than usual…
