5 Tips for Keeping Indoor Cats Happy
Published date: 02 July 2025

Some days, staying inside certainly sounds appealing, and our spoiled house cats have this luxury. Our indoor felines can live long, happy lives. However, they are at a higher risk of depression and boredom.
So, to keep your feline friend fulfilled, here are my five quick tips.
1) Invest in Multiple Scratchers
Scratching is a normal natural behaviour, and all cats need the opportunity to dig their claws into something. If cats don’t have anything appropriate to scratch, they will likely turn their attention to your sofa or carpet.
Is your furniture already suffering? Watch our Ways to Stop Your Cat Scratching video.
Indoor cats can’t test out their claws on trees and fences outside, so they require even more dedicated scratching space inside. Essentially, the more scratchers, the merrier!
Remember, sturdy scratchers are better. Explore our stunning range of tough scratchers.
2) Monitor Your Cat’s Weight
Indoor cats are more likely to be overweight due to less exercise and space to roam.
Prevent your cat from getting too chunky by carefully monitoring their weight. Weigh your cat every week and get into the habit of measuring out their meals.

3) Keep Your Cat Company
Our cats always love us, despite the myths people may believe. Indoor cats are even more likely to be strongly bonded with their owners.
You are your cat’s companion, so they will certainly notice when you haven’t been around. It is so important not to leave your indoor cats alone for long periods. They need attention, fuss and love from their owners.
4) A Clean Grass Source
You may have spotted cats eating grass before and wondered what on earth they are doing.
Grass-eating is a natural behaviour. The plant fibre found in grass pushes food through the digestive tract; this helps keep cats’ stools regular and reduces the chance of hairballs.
Indoor cats don’t have the same access to grass as outside pets. Sometimes, this can lead to our mischievous moggies munching on our house plants. This isn’t ideal for either cat or plant, so avoid this by growing your feline some safe, natural grass.
If your cat is obsessed with eating your houseplants, try spraying them with the King Cat Keep Off Spray. This is a lemon-scented spray which can be safely used on plants to deter mischievous moggy mouths.

5) Play Every Day!
Our feline friends are natural hunters who are driven to stalk, chase and kill their prey. Our house cats still have these same desires and, without playtime, are likely to get very frustrated.
Bored cats are unhappy and destructive!
Play allows cats to experience those natural hunting highs and keeps them fit and healthy. Aim to play twice a day for around 15-20 minutes. Ensure you go through all the hunting stages and remember to make it realistic.
